Couple won't let cancer stop their wedding

When Kris Shook and Heather Karl met two years ago, it wasn?t love at first sight.

?I was like, who is this big football player guy with the tattoos?? said Heather.

Heather had been set up. She was moving and a friend sent Kris, a competitive fitness contestant, to her door to help. It didn?t take long for him to win her over.

?He?s my best friend. He?s the sweetest man in the world,? said Heather at their north Tacoma home Friday. ?I can?t imagine my life without him.?

Happy and healthy, the couple started a real estate business together. Kris popped the question on the gondola at Crystal Mountain. Everything was perfect.
?
Until a visit to the doctor changed everything.

?They told me, not only do I have Stage 4 have lymphoma, I have two different kinds of lymphoma,? said Kris. ?I was like, this guy? He doesn?t even drink fluoridated water, he?s so healthy,? said Heather.
?
It was April 2 of this year. Their wedding day just three months away. Kris and Heather had a choice to make. They could call off the wedding to focus on Kris's chemotherapy, or soldier on. They decided to fight the cancers together.

??I just didn't want cancer to dictate my life,? said Kris.

That meant changes.? Planning a wedding while battling a deadly disease will drain you both emotionally and financially. Because they don't have great insurance, the initial hospital bills were jaw dropping.

?It was over 52,000 and that was just the beginning,? said Heather.

To save money, Heather is now making her own wedding dress, her own invitations. She's even making the wine. Survival is a struggle in so many ways right now, especially since when they exchange their vows next Saturday and promise to spend the rest of their lives together, Kris and Heather don't really know how long that will be.

?As positive as I am every day about beating cancer, it does cross my mind from time to time. The what ifs, am I gonna pull through,? said Kris.

The one thing they do know is neither will ever give up. When cancer pushes, they'll push back harder ? together - with the power of love.

?I'm gonna kick it in the butt and spend the rest of my life with her,? said Kris. ?That's what motivates me every single day.?

Kris and Heather find out at the end of September whether his treatments are beating the cancers.? After that, they hope to enjoy their honeymoon.

Friends have set up a fund to help the couple with their medical expenses. If you?d like to help, go to their webpage Cancer Can't Stop This Wedding.

Dumbass Steals iPhones, Leaves His Samsung Galaxy Behind

iPhone-5-at-Apple-Store

We all know how exciting getting your first iPhone can be. But you should always remember to take your old phone home with you when you upgrade at the store ? particularly if you decided to steal your iPhone rather than pay for it.

One man was caught red-handed for a robbery at a DMW Wireless store in Springfield, Virginia, when he left his Samsung Galaxy behind after fleeing the scene.

Travis Montgomery Snyder, 25, was arrested on Monday in Remington, Va., after stealing ?several? iPhones from the DMW Wireless store back in February.

According to a search warrant, police were able to link him to the crime after finding his Galaxy smartphone under a pile of broken glass near the store?s entrance.

Surveillance footage from the store on Spring Garden Drive also showed a man matching Snyder?s description,?The Washington Post?reports.

He might as well have left his name and address on the counter.

U.S. falls to Canada at World University Games

In what was essentially a two-game group stage after three opening contests against overmatched foes, the U.S. World University Games team surprisingly crashed out of medal round play on Friday after suffering a second consecutive defeat, this one coming 94-85 to Canada. This loss follows a similar 93-84 setback to Australia yesterday, and leaves the U.S. in third place in the group, with only the top two teams advancing to the quarters.

When I covered a couple days of the trials in Colorado Springs, Colo., the team appeared to be light on perimeter shooting, at least in the traditional sense coming from guards. The wing and frontcourt shooters held up their end of the bargain in both losses, though.?The U.S. made 10-of-25 threes against Australia and then connected on a gaudy 15-of-32 against Canada, with Doug McDermott making 9-of-19 tries in the two games and Luke Hancock connecting on five of his six tries this morning.

The team?s issues, on both ends of the court, lay closer to the basket. The U.S. was played to a standstill on the glass in both games and was hurt badly by both Australia and Canada in terms of points conceded in the paint. Team USA didn?t defend the arc well, either, and the U.S. allowed 1.21 and 1.16 points per possession in the defeats. On offense, the U.S. didn?t finish well around the rim, a large factor in the combined 34-of-87 shooting from two-point range in the two losses. Combine everything, and you have an early exit.

The defensive, (relative) rebounding and inside finishing woes give reason to question Bob McKillop and Co.?s decision to rely primarily on Cory Jefferson at the 5, leaving very few minutes for either Adreian Payne or Alex Kirk. Payne played just 20 minutes in the two defeats and Kirk just two, including a DNP against Australia while New Mexico teammate Cameron Bairstow carved the U.S. up with 22-9-5. Kirk tweeted after the Australia game that he wasn?t injured, so whether he ultimately just was a poor fit for McKillop?s system or something else was going on, the U.S.?s decision to play smaller and less physical players for two straight games clearly didn?t work out.

The team will continue on in the consolation bracket, but can finish no higher than 9th place in the tournament.

THE TV footie battle between Sky and BT hotted up last night ? after BOTH claimed they landed the best matches.

The Premier League yesterday announced the games each will show for the first third of the season ? the first time Sky has had competition for the top matches.

Murder charge to be filed in death of Calif boy

The 16-year-old half-brother of an 11-year-old boy found dead earlier this week in Southern California will be charged with one count of murder, prosecutors said Friday.

The suspect was expected to make a first court appearance on Monday in juvenile court in the death of 11-year-old Terry Dewayne Smith Jr., whose disappearance Sunday led hundreds of volunteers to search for four days in triple-digit heat.

On Wednesday, authorities announced they had found a body matching the description of Terry Jr. in a shallow grave under a tree behind the house he shared with his mother, half-brother and other family members.

Riverside County prosecutors have also asked for a court hearing to determine whether the half-brother should be tried as an adult, said John Hall, a spokesman for the district attorney's office.

The Associated Press is not naming the suspect because he is a juvenile.

Initial reports from the mother, relayed by law enforcement, described Terry Jr. as an autistic boy who took special medication and answered only to his nickname, "JuJu."

His father, however, insisted that his son was not autistic.

The boy lived with him until 2011, when he went to live with his mother, and was a normal kid who loved video games and baseball, said Terry Dewayne Smith Sr., a 62-year-old retired truck driver living in Charleston, W. Va.

"He was a very bright, well-adjusted child, at least he was when he left here," said Smith Sr. "He pushed buttons and would aggravate you. But, other than that, it was just the typical way ... of a typical boy trying to get his way."

Smith Sr. also helped raise the half-brother accused in the case, he said. The teen moved from West Virginia to California after his mother abruptly pulled him out of school, he said.

"I taught him how to walk. I helped him when he was on the baseball team here," he said, recalling that he called the half-brother "little Spider-Man."

A phone listing for the boy's mother, Shawna Smith, was disconnected. Messages left at a second number associated with her address were not returned.

Investigators told Smith Sr. that Terry Jr. died after a hit to the head but declined to say more, citing a request from police who are still working the case.

Hundreds of volunteers searched for Terry Jr. for more than three days in abandoned trailers and campsites tucked into the scrubby hillsides of rural Riverside County, where horse ranches dot the landscape and large stretches of land remain undeveloped. Sheriff's deputies fanned out on horseback and with bloodhounds in the triple-digit heat and helicopters buzzed overhead, searching for clues.

A detective involved in the search gave credit for the discovery of the body to a volunteer woman who said she had a vision of where to find Terry.

Detective John Powers told KFI-AM radio on Thursday that Pam Ragland and her children came to the property where investigators, including him, had searched thoroughly already and found the body immediately.

"She actually went right up the driveway of the house, on to the property, and right up to the body of this boy," Powers said. "Not in 23 years have I ever seen anything like this."

Hubble finds a true blue planet: Giant Jupiter-sized planet located 63 light-years away

[unable to retrieve full-text content]Astronomers using NASA's Hubble Space Telescope have deduced the actual visible-light color of a planet orbiting another star 63 light-years away. If seen directly the planet, known as HD 189733b, would look like a "deep blue dot," reminiscent of Earth's color as seen from space.
