Animal Services Again to Offer Free Dog, Cat Dipping

Animal Services announced Monday that due to the heavy rains and the 144 dogs dipped last week, they will partner again with ACCO Farm and Ranch Center to provide free tick and flea dips Wednesday, July 24 from 2 p.m. through 4:00 p.m. at the ACCO Farm and Ranch Center 249 s. E 11th.

Come to the facilities west parking lot and contact one of the employees for assistance with the dipping. We have a place inside the store that personnel will administer a flea and tick spray to cats; makes sure they are in a carrier.

Animal Services Manager Aaron Vannoy said, "The flea and ticks dips were extremely popular for pet owners last week, and it is an important component of an integrated pest management system for pet owners." Kevin Jackson added "An Integrated Pest Management is a pest control strategy that uses a variety of complementary strategies including identifying and treating all areas of pest issues. Pet owners will always need to treat pet beds, blankets, yards and dog houses to prevent the pest problem as well as contact their local vet for long term prevention for their pets. Now is a good time for dog owners to take action and we're helping do that at no cost to them."?

There are four major tick-borne diseases that affect dogs in the United States:? ehrlichiosis, babesiosis, Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever and Lyme Disease.? They are all dangerous and most can be fatal unless diagnosed in time and treated aggressively (American Veterinary Medical Association).? "The flea and tick dips are designed to kill any ticks and fleas on the pet at the time of the dip, owners will also need to treat the yard and any areas their roams," commented Vannoy.
