SuccessFactors CEO Dalgaard Leaving SAP in Cloud Business ...

ejection_seatGerman software giant SAP announced a pretty broad management shake-up across its cloud-oriented software units today. The big news, however, was that Lars Dalgaard, the CEO of the cloud-based human resources software company SuccessFactors, is leaving the company to become an investor.

You?ll remember that SAP paid $3.4 billion to acquire SuccessFactors in late 2011 (a deal that brought tears to the eyes of certain writers).

That kicked off a spate of HR-focused cloud acquisitions. Within two months, Oracle had paid $1.9 billion for Taleo, and Salesforce.com acquired Rypple and turned it into Work.com. This string of deals was taking place against the backdrop of Workday raising a lot of money from investors, on its way to going public in one of the more successful IPOs of 2012.

Since SuccessFactors was a cloud-born company and SAP is, let?s face it, an old-school on-premise software company working hard to transition to a more cloud-friendly way of doing things with its HANA line, it?s not hard to imagine some cultural friction.

That?s what analyst Karl Keirstead of BMO Capital Markets attributed Dalgaard?s departure to in a note to clients following the announcement. ?We believe that there were some conflicts between the cloud development efforts under Dalgaard and the HANA and on-premises development team under CTO Vishal Sikka. We?re not altogether surprised by the changes given the challenge of integrating fast-growing SuccessFactors with a more methodical SAP culture, but despite this, SAP has made solid progress in closing its cloud gaps over the past 12 months,? Keirstead wrote.

In a company statement and on Twitter, Dalgaard said he?s going to become an investor. One other factor that is likely playing into his decision to leave SAP is the fact that he has a 3-year-old son who is battling leukemia.

Dalgaard just tweeted this about an hour ago:

Look forward to becoming worlds best professional investor ? and continue to help SAP as formal advisor ? will try to honor all I learned

SAP cloud efforts will now be headed up by Bob Calderoni, the CEO of Ariba, another cloud company that SAP acquired last year for $4.3 billion, and Rob Enslin, an SAP veteran.

Keirstead worries that the pair may not bring enough HR-specific expertise to the business. Ariba runs a cloud-based network focused on business-to-business commerce ? human capital management in the cloud is still a pretty hot business. Earlier this week, Workday reported a smaller-than-expected loss and raised its revenue outlook for the year.

As Keirstead at BMO put it: ?Our key concern is that SAP?s on-premises business is most vulnerable on the HCM [human capital management] side, where Workday is increasingly competitive and where Dalgaard brought strong domain expertise. SAP?s new cloud business head [Calderoni] has no such expertise in the HCM arena and in our judgment will need to bolster SAP?s presence with some key HCM hires.?

For what it?s worth, SAP shares are down by more than 3 percent this morning to $75.85.

Is the Vatican Bank finally fighting money laundering for real?

The Holy See's new financial watchdog just announced six incidents of possible monetary malfeasance from last year

Rene Bruelhart, the head of the Vatican's new Financial Intelligence Authority, disclosed Wednesday that he had found six incidents of possible money laundering in the Vatican Bank from last year ? marking the first step in what may be a new era of transparency for the scandal-stained institution.

The Vatican Bank, officially called the Institute for Religious Works (IOR), manages an estimated $5 billion in assets for religious orders and Catholic charities. A private entity, its inner workings have long been shrouded in secrecy. In 2012, following investigations of money laundering and probes into the behavior of the top brass, Forbes called the IOR "the most secret bank in the world."

SEE MORE: WATCH: LeBron James' unbelievable, last-second, game-winning shot

The bank was founded in 1942 to safeguard and administer funds for Catholic organizations around the world, and got into trouble at the height of the Cold War, "when the Catholic Church was consumed by the threat of the Soviet Union," said TIME in a 2010 story about another Vatican probe. "In a sharply divided world, the Holy See found itself on the same side as the Mafia, whose Sicilian vote-buying operations propped up the Christian Democrats against the communists."

Then, in 1982, when Italy's second largest bank, Banco Ambrosiano, went bankrupt (allegedly due to mafia-related debt issues), the IOR was implicated as the bank's main shareholder. When Banco Ambrosiano's chairman, Roberto Calvi, was found hanging from London's Blackfriar's Bridge, his pockets stuffed with bricks and cash ? a likely mafia murder that remains untried ? the IOR's reputation took a beating. "The Vatican has been trying to shed its image as a murky financial center since," says the Financial Times.

But reforms were slow moving until late 2010, when Italian authorities seized $30 million from the Vatican Bank and placed the bank's president and chief executive under investigation for alleged violation of anti-money-laundering rules. Pope Benedict XVI established the Financial Intelligence Authority to help bring the bank up to international standards for preventing money laundering and terrorism financing. In September 2012, the Vatican hired Liechtenstein's former top anti-money-laundering expert, the experienced and rather dashing Rene Bruelhart, to whip the Vatican Bank into shape.

Bruelhart's announcement Wednesday that his agency found six suspicious transactions ? two of which were serious enough to pass to the Vatican's prosecutor ? represents something of a new leaf for the institution.

"There is a lot of internal support on this and it is very clear that [the Vatican] will be committed to pursue the initiated path," Bruelhart said, adding that the bank's challenges "are several and require perseverance."

Bruelhart has yet to publicly offer more details on the six incidents in question, though he did say that his team would come up with new laws and screening procedures to prevent future bad behavior.

Weather forecasters are predicting another busy Atlantic hurricane season. The storms will get their names from an alphabetical list of 21 names:

WHAT NAMES ARE ON THE LIST?

Andrea, Barry, Chantal, Dorian, Erin, Fernand, Gabrielle, Humberto, Ingrid, Jerry, Karen, Lorenzo, Melissa, Nestor, Olga, Pablo, Rebekah, Sebastien, Tanya, Van and Wendy.

WHO PICKS THE NAMES?

The National Hurricane Center started using women's names for Atlantic storms in 1953; men's names were added in 1979. The lists are now maintained by the World Meteorological Organization.

ARE NAMES REUSED?

Yes, there are six lists for the Atlantic that are used in rotation. This year's list will be used again in 2019. Names are taken off the list and replaced to avoid confusion if a hurricane causes a lot of damage or deaths. For example, Katrina was retired after it devastated New Orleans in 2005.

WHEN DO STORMS GET A NAME?

Tropical storms are assigned a name when their top winds reach 39 mph. A storm isn't a hurricane until it has maximum winds of at least 74 mph.

WHAT IF WE RUN OUT OF NAMES?

The Greek alphabet is used if there are more than 21 named storms in a season. That last happened in 2005; six storms were named Alpha, Beta, Gamma, Delta, Epsilon and Zeta.

WHAT ABOUT STORMS IN THE PACIFIC AND ELSEWHERE?

Yes, they get names, too. The lists are also determined by the World Meteorological Organization; the names are ones that are familiar in each region.

Huntsman Marine Science Centre: Eastview Secondary School

Grade 11 and 12 students from Eastview Secondary School, who arrived late Sunday afternoon, have been enjoying a busy week here at the Huntsman. The students began their week with an introduction to the local marine invertebrates, then a tour of the Fundy Discovery Aquarium as well as a field trip to Indian Point to study a mixed seashore environment.
On Tuesday and Wednesday morning the students were divided into two groups and while some hopped aboard the Fundy Spray to collect data and specimen samples, the others were in the lab learning more about the important, yet microscopic organisms, plankton.? Students in the lab also were introduced to some of the invasive species found in this area as well. In the afternoon, on Tuesday, students and staff went to Pottery Creek to capture, mark and release one of the better known invasive species in this area, the Green Crab.? Also while there the students took the opportunity to study the marine worms.? Tuesday evening was spent back in the lab identifying and classifying marine algae.? On Wednesday afternoon experiments in echinoderm behaviour were conducted, as well the students were given the opportunity to take a tour of the Atlantic Reference Centre.?

If you look under the rocks and seaweed at Pottery Creek you are sure to find some Green Crabs.

This crab?will be marked on the back of its' shell and then released.

Trying to identify the worms dug up can be hard work.

China's Ai Weiwei launches musical career with heavy metal "Dumbass" single

By Maxim Duncan

BEIJING (Reuters) - Dissident Chinese artist Ai Weiwei made his first foray into the musical world on Wednesday with the release of the top single from his debut album, a song called "Dumbass" that takes inspiration from his detention in 2011.

The video for the heavy metal song, which was directed by Ai with cinematography by acclaimed filmmaker Christopher Doyle, depicts Ai's 81 days in secretive detention in 2011, which sparked an international outcry.

"There was one thing I thought was interesting. When I was detained, there was a paramilitary officer standing there very seriously watching me, and he asked me quietly if I could sing a song," Ai told Reuters at his home in northeastern Beijing.

"At the time I felt extremely frustrated, because I felt terrible, and I realized that in a situation like that, these guards felt just like me, they wanted to hear songs," he said.

The video features Ai having his head and signature beard shaved by his son, and appearing in lipstick and a dress.

The lyrics rail against the authorities, as befit a man who has repeatedly criticized the Chinese government for flouting the rule of law and the rights of citizens, and are also dotted with obscenities.

The album, called "Divina Commedia" after the poem by Italian poet Dante, is a reference to the nickname given Ai by his supporters.

The rest of the six-track heavy metal album is due to be released next month, and contains songs about internet censorship and blind legal activist Chen Guangcheng, whose escape from house arrest last April and subsequent refuge in a U.S. embassy embarrassed China and led to a diplomatic tussle.

Ai said he was not worried about persecution for the album but he is gloomy about the prospects of it being sold in China, and is only distributing it online.

"My songs will certainly be blocked. Not just my songs, but my photograph and my name are all blocked. But there's no problem," he said.

He is also realistic about the aesthetic qualities of his music, but is determined to improve.

"It doesn't sound very good, because I don't have any real skill... And I found that in making music, I have a lot of difficulties," he said. "But I am trying very hard, and I will keep doing it, and I have hope to become someone who sings comparatively well."

Ai has already been in the studio recording his second album, which will be a collection of love songs, he said.

He has no immediate plans to perform live, but hopes one day to perform on Beijing's Tiananmen Square, arguably China's most sensitive location due to its central role in the bloody crackdown on pro-democracy demonstrators in 1989.

"On Tiananmen square one day, maybe. I'm sure it will happen," he said.

Make Your Home Picture Perfect With These Interior Decorating Tips

TIP! You must know what you want to do with a room before you begin to make changes to it. The mood can be anything you want it to be.

Home interior design can be a very complicated process for many people. This article is packed with a variety of interesting and inspiring interior planning ideas. Read through these ideas to find things that will work for your decorating needs.

TIP! An excellent tip for interior design is purchasing some excellent art. One painting can give the room a focus and add appeal.

Pick a mood or theme you want to have going on in your living space before beginning a design project. The mood of a room can range from calm and soothing to exciting and outrageous. Thinking of the mood theme before beginning will help you choose the theme of the room, and it ends up giving the room cohesion.

TIP! When re-designing a room, give extra thought to the color scheme you will be using. You should think about what looks good together and what will not so your room looks balanced.

Make sure to keep your space functional whenever you design an office. Comfort cannot be compromised when purchasing a chair and desk, and the right lighting is also very important. Your priority needs to be a proper space to work in, along with looking visually interesting.

TIP! Once you have an idea of what you want, check mass retailers for quality equivalents of designer work. Try not to always purchase a designer brand, as these can set you back a lot of money.

Mixing textures and patterns can add visual and tactile interest to a room. Patterns and textures attract the eye and can help enhance smooth surfaces, like glass and wood. Contemporary rooms demand contemporary textures and patterns.

TIP! Small details can have a big impact. You will be able to create a good look by putting together some little things such as patterns and bright accessories.

Reduce your interior design budget by looking for lower-cost alternatives to high-cost additions. High-end decor is real expensive, but if you look around and are resourceful, you will find something similar at a much cheaper price. The only time you should use designer brands is if you can?t find similar items for a cheaper price.

TIP! Be aware that there?s a risk of cluttering up a room with excess furnishings when you get into an ambitious interior design job. Too many accessories or too much furniture can make any room feel smaller and more cramped than it is.

When choosing furniture to place in a small room, look for pieces that have versatility. You can use an ottoman as a chair or a makeshift table. The ottoman can be used as both a place to sit as well as a table. Anything that you can find that can be used for more than one thing can make your room worthy of many purposes.

TIP! It?s very common for a home to have at least one small room that needs to feel larger than it really is. If you want to make your small spaces appear larger, use light and bright paint.

A good tip if you are interested in your interior design is to be sure you are up-to-date with current style trends. You probably do not want your walls to be covered by 1970?s wallpaper. Therefore, you should search around and discover how others are renovating their homes nowadays.

TIP! You do have to think of others when you are redecorating. You want to add some personality to the decor, but don?t be outlandish, especially if its a permanent fixture.

Giving your kitchen a facelift can be as easy as choosing new cabinet doors. Try using glass doors instead of traditional wood doors to open up your kitchen and make it look brighter. Place some accent pieces inside the cabinets for some extra flair.

TIP! Never hesitate to let your creativity flow when it comes to selecting interior paint colors. Look around online for some great ideas you can incorporate into your own project.

Consider what function a room must serve before you attempt to decorate it. Consider the number of people that will use the room and what they?ll use it for. Your living room needs to accommodate your family and friends, whereas your bedroom is only for you and your partner.

TIP! Replacing your room?s accessories is a quick and economical way to update the space. Accent pieces and lighting fixtures can be traded out easily.

When thinking about painting, it is best not to rush into it. In the event that you do this, you may end up hating the color you selected. Many colors look different once they are applied to the wall and dry. See how the samples look in different lighting. You might be surprised to find that you?re not as in love with a color as you thought you were.

TIP! Try using mirrors to brighten a room, with placement across from windows. A large mirror reflects and spreads out the light coming from the window.

Lights are one of the most important elements of a room. It helps create a mood for the room. You can use bright light for a positive vibe in bathrooms and kitchens. Bright lights can overwhelm small rooms and areas where you want to create a softer mood. Try dimmer lights for bedrooms and living rooms, if that?s the mood you desire to create.

TIP! An excellent addition you can make to your bathroom is a pedestal tub. These tubs are popular due to appearing beautiful and classy.

By now, you should have a notion of how you?d like to decorate your home. You can have the home of your dreams, and it doesn?t have to be difficult. Bookmark this article, roll up your sleeves and get started on creating the home of your dreams!

Spacewalking Astronauts Hunt for Space Station Ammonia Leak

Two spacewalking astronauts are hunting for an ammonia leak outside the International Space Station today (May 11) in the hopes of bringing the outpost's vital cooling system back up to full strength.

Clad in bulky spacesuits, NASA astronauts Chris Cassidy and Tom Marshburn floated outside the space station at 8:44 a.m. EDT (1244 GMT), beginning what officials have described as a six-hour detective's investigation in orbit to find - and hopefully fix - the ammonia coolant leak. The space station uses liquid ammonia as a vital coolant to keep its systems cool. You can?watch the spacewalk live here on SPACE.com?via NASA TV.

Cassidy, who is leading today's spacewalk, reported seeing "no smoking gun" as he and Marshburn began their inspection of an ammonia pump control box suspected to be the source of the leak. Later, they removed the box and repoted no signs of flakes of ammonia ice. Cassidy said he did see a brown spot that "looks like a coffee stain" on some equipment, but it is unclear if it is related. Mission Control asked for photos of the spot. [Emergency Spacewalk to Fix Space Station Leak in Photos]

The ammonia leak was first spotted by space station astronauts on Thursday (May 9), when the crew reported seeing flakes of frozen coolant floating outside. They recorded video of the ammonia leak and sent it down to Mission Control for analysis, leading to today's emergency spacewalk to search for the leak. It is the fastest spacewalk plan of its kind ever devised for a space station crew, mission managers have said.

The primary goal of today's spacewalk is to inspect the suspect ammonia pump control box for any signs of damage or leaks. The box is one of several on the space station's far left segment, known as the Port 6 truss. It is part of the cooling system for the two wing-like solar arrays extending from the Port 6 segment.

While the leak poses no danger to the space station's crew, if it goes unchecked it could impact the amount of power available for daily operations on the orbiting laboratory, mission managers have said.

If Cassidy and Marshburn find definite evidence of the ammonia leak in the pump box, they can replace the box with a spare stored on the truss segment. If no leak is found, they will re-install the original pump control box and return inside the space station, NASA officials have said.

So far, however, the spacewalkers have found no obvious signs of ammonia leaking from the pump control box.

"I can't think of anything to tell you other than nominal," Cassidy said as he described what he was seeing at the pump control box's location.

The two astronauts will also take extra care of their spacesuits while working near the ammonia pump control box. They have brushes and other tools to clean the spacesuits of any toxic ammonia flakes that may stick to them, and can perform a "bake out" to allow any ammonia to evaporate in sunlight, if needed.

This is not the first time astronauts have had to tackle ammonia leaks in the space station's cooling system during a spacewalk.

Last year, astronauts Sunita Williams of NASA and Akihiko Hoshide of Japan performed a spacewalk to fix a leak that was also found on the Port 6 truss. That ammonia leak was in the same coolant loop as the current leak, but engineers do not yet know if the two leaks are related.

The station's Port 6 truss is the oldest piece of the space station's scaffolding-like backbone and carries two of the outpost's eight wing-like solar arrays. It launched in November 2000 and was originally installed on the station's roof, towering over the orbiting lap. In 2007, visiting shuttle astronauts relocated the P6 truss to its final location on the station's far left side.

This is the fourth spacewalk for both Marshburn and Cassidy. Inside the International Space Station, commander Chris Hadfield of Canada and Russian cosmonauts Roman Romanenko, Alexander Misurkin and Pavel Vinogradov are following the spacewalkers' progress. Today's spacewalk comes just two days before Hadfield, Marshburn and Romanenko are due to return to Earth to end their five-month mission in space.

The three men are due to leave the space station on Monday (May 13) and land on the steppes of Kazakhstan in Central Asia. Those plans are still going forward, space station mission managers said.

What Space Does to Each of Your Five Senses

Commander of the International Space Station and awesome-stronaut Chris Hadfield just finished a weeklong series called ?Senses in Space,? where he describes what spending a long time in space does to each of your perceptions. And apparently, space is generally pretty bad for you. IMS: US medicine spending shows rare dip in 2012

TRENTON, N.J. (AP) ? Spending on prescription medicines in the U.S. fell for the first time in decades last year, slipping as cash-strapped consumers continued to cut back on use of health care services.

Patients also benefited from a surge of new, inexpensive generic versions of widely used drugs for chronic conditions like high cholesterol, according to a new report.

Total spending on medications dropped to $325.8 billion last year from $329.2 billion in 2011. Likewise, average spending per person on medicines fell by $33, to $898 last year, according to the report from the IMS Institute for Healthcare Informatics.

"That's the first time IMS has ever measured the decline in the 58 years we've been monitoring drugs," Michael Kleinrock, director of research development at the institute, told The Associated Press.

Factors behind last year's drop in drug spending include positive trends such as more use of cheap generic pills and flukes such as a fairly mild cold and flu season in early 2012. But there also was a big negative: people rationing their own health care.

IMS found affordability of health care remains a big problem for many Americans, with growing out-of-pocket costs forcing people to go without needed doctor visits, medicines and other treatments.

For some, that was because they lost jobs or homes during the worst recession in decades. But higher costs also are hitting many employed people who have health insurance.

Employers have been raising health costs for their workers well above the inflation rate, through higher copayments, premiums and deductibles. Many commercial insurance plans now have annual deductibles ? the amount a patient must pay before insurance kicks in ? that exceed $1,000, Kleinrock said.

The number of insured people with consumer-directed plans, where patients face very high deductibles and sometimes pay 20 percent of costs after that, has jumped from about 8 percent in 2008 to 19 percent last year. Now many folks insured through their jobs have such plans, not just young, healthy people buying insurance on their own.

"Even patients with insurance are feeling the pinch and have been reducing their use of health care," Kleinrock said.

The report notes that out-of-pocket costs, which exclude monthly health plan premiums, are now three times higher than they were five years ago, on average. They're seven times higher for those with consumer-driven plans.

That's one reason the number of doctor visits, planned hospital admissions and outpatient treatments each dipped by a half-percent to 1 percent last year, compared with 2011.

At the same time, the number of patients admitted to hospitals after coming to the emergency department spiked for the second straight year, climbing nearly 6 percent in 2012. That's a sign some people are waiting until they are very sick to seek medical help.

Meanwhile, the number of prescriptions used per person last year edged down just 0.1 percent. At the same time, the percentage of all prescriptions filled with a generic medicine rose from 80 percent in 2011 to 84 percent last year. Nearly three-quarters of prescriptions filled in 2012 cost patients $10 or less in copayments.

A big reason was new generic versions of some of the pharmaceutical industry's biggest-selling drugs of all time: Lipitor for high cholesterol, Plavix for preventing blood clots and strokes, Singulair for allergies and asthma, Diovan for high blood pressure and several others.

Those brand-name drugs all lost patent protection during 2012 or late 2011, enabling generic drug companies to flood the market with copycat pills costing up to 90 percent less.

Those new generics reduced spending on medicines by $28.9 billion last year. That savings was partly offset by the introduction of a big number of breakthrough drugs that are very expensive, drugmakers raising prices on existing medicines and population growth.

IMS, based in Parsippany, N.J., compiles and analyzes data from pharmacies, hospitals, nursing homes, drug wholesalers and other groups to produce its annual report on health care spending trends.

Back in 1957, the first year IMS studied, total U.S. drug spending was only $1.9 billion. That's risen each year since, generally climbing more in years when the economy is strong.

For now, IMS is forecasting that overall spending on health care will continue to grow faster than spending on medicines at least through 2017. That's due to factors including the increasing number of elderly patients and those with very expensive chronic conditions such as diabetes, psychiatric disorders, severe heart disease and various cancers.

"The sickest people drive most of our health care spending," Kleinrock said, noting that just over half the total spending by private health insurance plans last year was for just 5 percent of their members.

How to turn off the new persistent Facebook notification

Facebook Settings

Wade through the tangled mess of Facebook notification settings

Facebook likes to do a lot of "opt out" rather than "opt in" changes on its app updates, and the most recent culprit is a new persistent notification for users to keep up with their Facebook notifications at all times. The notification will pop up when you first install the new version of the Facebook app, and will stay in your bar until you tap part of it to enter the app or tap a small "x" on the right side to dismiss it, much like notifications from media players. Unfortunately, it will keep coming back if you don't go change the settings in the Facebook app. To disable it, open your Facebook app, tap "menu" (or the soft menu key) and tap into the Facebook settings. Scroll down to the very bottom of the list, where under "Advanced Notification Settings" you should see an option to uncheck "Ongoing notifications". (Some users report not seeing the setting, which we have yet to figure out the reason behind.)

While you're in there, you can also choose to disable any other notification from Facebook. This will be especially important if you happen to like the ongoing notification, because if you keep the other notifications turned on you will receive two Facebook notifications any time that something happens. We know, Facebook's settings are a mess, but if you're going to keep the app installed the least you can do is keep the notifications in check.
