ThinkGeek Makes Christmas Possible For Cancer Patient & Family ...

(Tashi & Wash)

For Consumerist reader Tashi and her husband, Wash, who was diagnosed with a rare form of cancer only a few months after they wed, perusing the ThinkGeek catalog was something they would do to amuse themselves and keep their spirits up ? even if they couldn't really afford to buy most of the items they coveted. But when the people at ThinkGeek got wind of the young couple's ordeal, they decided to play Santa.

Earlier this week, an entire gift bag of goodies arrived from ThinkGeek. And beyond being a huge boon to Tashi and Wash, it also allowed them to share in the holiday spirit by giving gifts to people who would not have received them otherwise.

Writes Tashi in her thank you letter to ThinkGeek:

The material things that we received from ThinkGeek were wonderful. Far more than the actual items, though, is something that is truly priceless. Wash does not have many Christmases left, if any, and to be able to give and receive fun, quirky presents, to be able to spend Christmas without the cloud of brain cancer hovering over us, is something that we could not have expected and cannot possibly express sufficient gratitude for...

We have so much appreciation for your company. This action epitomizes for me what our geek culture stands for; unity and community. My husband has a rare cancer for his age, but he does not feel "alone". He is part of something so much bigger and you have helped to show that. You see your customers as people first, and that is a rare commodity these days.

Tashi tells Consumerist she's not exactly sure how ThinkGeek found them, though she believes that someone must have sent a link to their blog to the company, which then contacted her via Twitter.

Bon Jovi Death Hoax Creator Confesses, Cites Irritation With Overexposed Singer

Living, breathing rocker and New Year's Eve star Jon Bon Jovi showed off his physique on a family Christmas vacation, while reading Bill Clinton's latest book. Nice.

As you can see, the Internet hoax that proclaimed Jon Bon Jovi dead earlier this month was B.S. - helpfully cleared up by the singer himself - and thank goodness.

What kind of person actually starts a Twitter hoax to kill off Bon Jovi, you ask? Well, we now know, as the person responsible for starting the rumor confessed!

Jon Bon Jovi Shirtless

Pennsylvania musician Jeffrey Goho told the Asbury Park Press (N.J.) he started up the fake Twitter account in mid-December with the intention of offing Jon Bon.

He reported that the "Wanted Dead or Alive" singer passed away on tour in his native New Jersey. Since then, "I've gotten a lot of backlash from it," he says.

Stunning news right there. Goho recalls how it got started:

"All I heard was 'Bon Jovi this,' 'Bon Jovi starting a restaurant.' The Advil commercial. It was like, 'Jeez, (Bon Jovi) was a household name due to music, not business."

"Long story short, [my band and I] got so worked up in the conversation, I just kind of took the liberty and started (the rumor), because I was so irritated."

Makes sense. Totally worth fake killing someone over.

Goho, 30, said that within 24 hours his account was “slammed” with hate mail. “I'm not proud of this,’’ he said, but denies he had any self-promoting motive.

“No, no, no, I didn’t do this as a business endeavor. As stupid as it sounds, I was just irritated. It was wrong to do and I almost kind of hurt myself.”

“Ultimately the more thought that I gave to it, I realized that all his endeavors, his business endeavors, have actually made the tri-state area prosper, hence more musicians have more available places to go, more people to play to, and I was quite wrong.”

Hey, at least he can admit it. Lesson learned to all bored Twitter users: Do not start rumors that rock stars are dead just because they endorse products.

Rome's Colosseum remains open despite damage reports

Officials at the Colosseum ruins in Rome have confirmed that the popular attraction will remain open to tourists as normal, despite reports of damage to the structure earlier in the week.

The Italian news agency Ansa reported that pieces of the 2000-year-old amphitheatre, regarded as one of the most impressive feats of architecture in the Roman Empire, had fallen on Christmas Day, as well as on Tuesday.

However, the director of the Colosseum, Rossella Rea, was quick to downplay the sighting, while the culture ministry also insisted that "nothing had collapsed since the 18th century."

When contacted by Telegraph Travel, officials at the Colosseum said the attraction was open as normal and that there were no plans to close.

An employee at the Rome Tourist Board also said the site was safe to visit.

The Colosseum, which costs ?12 (?10) to enter, attracts up to two million tourists each year and is one of the most visited sites in the the city, second only to the Vatican.

A restoration project on the structure, which used to seat 50,000 spectators in Imperial Roman times, is due to take place in spring 2012.

Rumors bring Apple TV hopes to peak!

Apple-TV.jpg The iTV, or Apple TV as it is more popularly known as will come in with some good stuff on the display front. Samsung Electronics and Sharp will be responsible for the manufacture of chips and displays, for the Apple entertainment device. I'm not sure what to call it as yet. There is potential from other lesser know companies such as Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC), Advanced Semiconductor Engineering (ASE) and Siliconware Precision Industries (SPIL). The assembly part of the TV will be handled by Foxconn Electronics.

By the end of 2012, we may see the ultimate launch of Apple TV. The finalization of hardware standards is expected to be in place by Q2 2012.

Did Google's Panda Updates Really Impact Content Farms?

Did Google's Panda Updates Really Impact Content Farms?

By: Matthew Elshaw
2011-12-20

With Google releasing no less than 7 different Panda updates in 2011, now is the perfect time to see if these changes have made any difference to search results. New Scientist magazine recently published an article on the topic that claims search engines have won a major victory in their battle against content farms.

The magazine came to this conclusion after hiring University of Glasgow computer scientist Richard McCreadie to study 50 different search queries which were known to be a target of content farms. Examples of these queries include "how to organise your desktop" and "how to train for a marathon".

According to the article, as recently as March, the first 10 results from a Google search for "how to organise your desktop" contained nine links to pages churned out by content farms " websites that publish reams of articles, often of dubious quality, that aim simply to attract clicks and advertising dollars.

Google then released a number of "Panda" algorithm updates which aimed at filtering out these questionable search results. According to Mr McCreadie these changes have made an impact,

In the case of the marathon query, sites that contained lists of generic tips, such as "invest in a good pair of running shoes", were present in the top 10 in March but had disappeared by August, while high-quality sources, such as Runner's World magazine, now appear near the top. Similar trends were found throughout the 50 queries.

Well known content sites like ehow.com have also backed up the findings, stating that their traffic has dropped by 20 percent following Google's series of Panda updates.

In related news, Google have also stated that there will?be no further Panda updates in 2011 " but webmasters can expect more fine tuning in the new year.

Off-field woes

By STUART CONDIE

AP Sports Writer

Associated Press Sports

updated 12:04 p.m. ET Dec. 28, 2011

LONDON (AP) -Football in 2011 was dominated by events off the field rather than on it.

Barcelona and Lionel Messi continued to provide some of the most sparkling performances in the sport's long history and Uruguay further overshadowed Brazil and Argentina at the top of the South American game, but headlines around the world were dominated by allegations of corruption and bribery at FIFA.

The sport's governing body was beset by allegations as behind-the-scenes politicking was thrust into the spotlight by the fallout from its 2010 decision to give future World Cup tournaments to Russia and Qatar.

Sepp Blatter was re-elected unopposed as FIFA president but the year was almost out before he announced details of long-promised reforms.

Blatter's position at the top of FIFA was secured after his only rival for the presidency, Mohamed bin Hammam of Qatar, was forced to withdraw from the June election over bribery allegations that later led to a lifetime ban from the sport.

Blatter has hinted that his new Independent Governance Committee could examine cases including the decision to award the 2018 World Cup to Russia and the 2022 event to Qatar. Even the 10-year-old kickbacks case that led to former FIFA President Joao Havelange's resignation from the IOC is being picked over.

The 95-year-old Havelange, Blatter's mentor and predecessor, joined the IOC in 1963 and was its longest-standing member. He resigned in December, days before he faced possible suspension for allegedly taking a $1 million kickback from World Cup marketing deals while FIFA president.

The IOC closed its ethics investigation into Havelange after his resignation.

The appointment of a University of Basel professor - who formerly served on an independent inquiry team examining alleged corruption in the Iraqi oil-for-food program - to spearhead reforms lends credibility to Blatter's committee.

But whether a body widely criticized for a lack of transparency and accountability can be persuaded of the need for comprehensive change remains to be seen.

Blatter was forced to apologize in November for causing outrage among players, officials and even sponsors by suggesting that racial incidents between players on the field could be settled by a handshake at the end of a game.

The topic of racism surfaced several times through the year, with England captain John Terry and Uruguay forward Luis Suarez both accused of abusing opponents, while France coach Laurent Blanc came close to resigning following a row about quotas at training academies.

Blanc acknowledged that his crude language in a conversation with French Football Federation colleagues was wrong and offensive but said the debate over whether dual nationals of African descent should be in the French system remained valid.

Blanc was cleared of discrimination by the FFF.

Another immediate challenge facing Blatter and FIFA is the state of Brazil's preparations to host the 2014 World Cup, which are mired in infighting, corruption allegations and a simple lack of progress.

Organizing committee head Ricardo Teixeira - himself linked to the ISL kickback case that claimed Havelange - was embroiled in allegations of bribery and money laundering that saw Brazil sports minister Orlando Silva forced out in October.

The Brazilian government has yet to pass the necessary laws to allow the country to stage the tournament and stadium construction is behind schedule.

"The executive committee is worried about that," Blatter said. "I will myself take up the World Cup in a presidential level and in the first or second month of next year I will go and meet the head of state."

And in a sign of the tensions between various factions, Teixeira snubbed Pele from the 2014 qualifying draw in Rio in July only to see state president Dilma Rouseff appoint the former national team great as her government's World Cup ambassador.

Brazilian football was dealt a series of blows in 2011, with the death of former captain Socrates after a lifetime of heavy drinking, a quarterfinal exit at the Copa America and Santos' 4-0 drubbing by Barcelona in the final of the Club World Cup.

Brazil had already failed to impress at Copa America before it missed all four of its penalty kicks in a 2-0 shootout loss to Paraguay. If there was any consolation, it was that rival Argentina exited at the same stage and in the same manner against eventual champion Uruguay.

With Diego Forlan and Suarez up front, Uruguay built on its surprise run to the 2010 World Cup semifinals and routed Paraguay 3-0 in the final to win its first continental title since 1995.

There was no such shift in power in Europe, where world and European champion Spain remained the team to beat.

With Spain stars including Xavi Hernandez, Andres Iniesta, David Villa and Sergio Busquets in its squad, Barcelona dominated the club scene with a third straight domestic league title, a third Champions League title in six years and the 13th trophy of coach Pep Guardiola's 3 1/2-year tenure at the Club World Cup.

Predictably, though, Barcelona's star player wasn't Spanish.

Messi continued to draw comparisons with all-time great Diego Maradona with his seemingly unstoppable dribbling, rampant goal scoring and imaginative set-up play.

The Argentine finished the 2010-11 season with 53 goals in all competitions - including one in the 3-1 Champions League final win over Manchester United - and is almost certain to win FIFA's world player of the year award for a third straight year.

"We have good players in the team, but he makes the difference," Guardiola said. "We can compete, but without him we would not have that qualitative leap that we do have with him."

Elsewhere, American Samoa won its first ever match, North Korea was kicked out of the next Women's World Cup after five players tested positive for steroids at this year's tournament, more than 100 players at the Under-17 World Cup in Mexico tested positive for clenbuterol after eating local meat, and Wales manager Gary Speed was founded hanged at home.

But if there was a feel-good story, it was Japan's success at the Women's World Cup in Germany.

Their country devastated by a tsunami and earthquake that left nearly 20,000 people dead or missing, the Japanese players vowed they would inspire their homeland. The did it with an improbable victory in the final, equalizing against the favored United States in the 81st minute and again with three minutes of extra time remaining before winning a shootout 3-1.

Jared Bernstein: A Holiday Message

We may be at an interesting inflection point.

- Large majorities have had it with Congressional dysfunctionality.

- Influential Republicans like Mitch McConnell are recognizing the above and view it as a threat to their party.

- Reasonable conservative voices are writing smart pieces that seem to be reaching for hybrid positions on social and economic issues. See here and here, for example.

- The latest debacle -- the fight to extend unemployment insurance and the payroll tax cut -- appears to have demonstrably hurt the Republicans and helped the Democrats (especially the president), and one might expect that ensuing fights will redound similarly, i.e., the public appears to be internalizing the meme that the Democrats are fighting for the middle class while the Republicans are fighting for the rich. Politically, this is a dangerous possibility for Republicans, especially in an election year.

Don't get me wrong -- I'm not suggesting a Kumbaya moment is in the offing. There are still irresistible forces in play here; the Tea Party members of Congress are, I suspect, if anything, even more pissed off and ready to wreck more havoc when they get back. A wounded tiger is a dangerous tiger.

The Republican candidates are also busy fanning these flames.

But these forces of negativity can only breathe if they have the oxygen of public and media support. If they become widely viewed as a small, angry minority selfishly blocking the rest of us from the pragmatic approach to meeting the challenges we all face, they will become increasingly ignored and irrelevant.

Kind of like what Bob Dylan was talking about here.

We thus may look back at this moment as one when the hyper-partisanship undermining our democracy began to crack. Or not. Either way, you can read about it here on my blog.

Happy Christmas and Seasonally Adjusted Greetings!

Apple acquired NeXT 15 years ago, Jean-Louis Gass?e still dreaming of what could've been

It might be hard to picture now, but back in the mid-nineties, the threat of bankruptcy was very real for a company headquartered in Cupertino. That would all change with the purchase of NeXT on December 20, 1996 -- a move that gave the fledgling computer maker a modern OS, but more importantly brought one of its founders, Steve Jobs, back into the fold. The rest is history, as Jobs eventually secured the helm, forming a team that would go on to birth products like the iMac, iPod, iPhone and iPad. But hardware innovation aside, ultimately that comeback wouldn't have been possible without OS X -- an OS which arose directly out of the ashes of NextStep. Sure, there was the occasional misstep along the way -- G4 Cube and hockey-puck mouse be damned -- but frankly we can't think of any turnaround as epic, nor relevant. Can you?

Judge upholds Beresford-Redman's extradition (omg!)

LOS ANGELES (AP) ? A Los Angeles federal judge has upheld former "Survivor" producer Bruce Beresford-Redman's extradition to Mexico to face charges in his wife's death.

In the ruling Wednesday, U.S. District Judge Philip S. Gutierrez wrote that there are many pages of competent evidence that the producer killed his wife during a family vacation in Mexico last year.

The Emmy-nominated producer has been jailed in Los Angeles since November on a fugitive warrant.

His attorneys filed a petition for writ of habeas corpus in August arguing that his detention was not supported by facts in the case. Gutierrez disagreed, saying all evidence points to a homicide committed by Beresford-Redman.

His defense lawyer says he is weighing his next legal move.

Cocky Simon Cowell vows "X Factor" will improve (Reuters)

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) ? "X Factor" creator Simon Cowell said on Monday he was probably "too cocky" when he launched the U.S. TV talent show earlier this year, boasting it would overtake his old program, No. 1-rated "American Idol."

But Cowell, who admits being confident by nature, pledged that the two-part 'X Factor' finale this week will be worth watching and any of the three finalists is worthy of the unprecedented prize of a $5 million recording contract.

The acerbic British entrepreneur and "X Factor" judge said that Justin Bieber, rapper Pitbull and R&B singer Ne-Yo would be among the superstars performing on Thursday's finale, before the winner of the first season is revealed.

"The X Factor" launched in the United States in September after months of hype from Cowell, who predicted it would beat "American Idol" as the most-watched show on U.S. TV.

He had his reasons for the boast. "X Factor," after all, has been the most popular TV show in Britain for several years and winners have generally gone straight to the top of the pop music charts. In the U.S., "American Idol" is no different, and Cowell was a key force behind its success.

Yet, 'X Factor' has underperformed Cowell's expectations.

Although it has been a hit for broadcaster Fox drawing about 12 million viewers weekly, its audience is less than half that of "American Idol", which returns to Fox in January.

"I think I probably came here a little too cocky, but I am cocky by nature. I had come off the back of a massive hit in the U.K., had the adrenaline (and) couldn't wait to put the show on here, and it is going to take a little longer than I thought," Cowell said at a news conference ahead of the final.

"But with these three finalists ... this will be the greatest final we have ever been in ... This is $5 million talent here," he said. "We are going to put on a show this week. And it's going to be better next year."

Ballad singer Melanie Amaro, 19, bluesy Josh Krajcik, 30, and rapper Chris Rene, 28, will sing for the "X Factor" prize on Wednesday.

Cowell said each finalist would sing a duet with a surprise superstar as part of Wednesday's competition. The winner will be chosen by public vote and announced after a two-hour finale on December 22.

All three finalists are expected to get recording contracts, but only the winner will be assured of the $5 million deal.

Judge and record producer Antonio (L.A.) Reid said he was proud and happy of the singers who had made it to the final after four months of nationwide auditions and live shows.

"They are all amazingly talented, unique in their own right (and) each one of them has a distinct competitive advantage," Reid said.

"I think they represent us well. They look very modern, big on talent and loads of charisma, so I couldn't be happier."

Economic recovery slow for US nonprofits (AP)

SEATTLE ? As the first signs of an economic recovery make the news, many of the nation's nonprofit organizations are digging in for another three to four years of financial distress, according to researchers who keep an eye on the charitable world.

Some larger nonprofits are seeing donations start to rise again, but most report their income is holding steady at lower, post-recession levels or is still going down, according to a new study from the Nonprofit Research Collaborative.

The collaborative found 59 percent of nonprofits report their donation income is flat or lower than in 2010, which was another down year for most charities. Among those that receive some government dollars ? long considered a safety net for charitable organizations ? more than half are reporting a decline in income for the year.

Forty-one percent of nonprofits have seen their donation income go up in 2011, but most of the nation's smaller charities with less than $3 million in total spending saw donations drop again this year.

Food pantries and homeless shelters across the country have reported funding crises this year because of an increase in need coupled with a drop in donations.

Siena House, a women's shelter in Waukesha, Wis., briefly shut down this past summer because it didn't have the money to continue operations. A fall fundraising drive brought in $60,000 and Siena House was able to reopen in December.

The First Baptist Church of Danville, Ky., in November closed its small food bank that fed up to 200 families a year because of volunteer and donation shortages. The food bank depended entirely on donations for its operation and volunteers to run it and just couldn't keep up with demand, said Tom Butler, a church volunteer.

About 8 percent of the charities included in the report say they are in danger of closing for financial reasons, while among smaller charities, that figure is 20 percent.

"Nonprofits are still facing very challenging circumstances," said Una Osili, director of research at The Center on Philanthropy at Indiana University, one of six organizations in the Nonprofit Research Collaborative.

Few will actually go out of business, Osili said, but cutting programs and laying off staff are a real possibility. Many are using volunteers to do jobs previously completed by staff.

"The good news is that nonprofits are starting to look ahead and think about ways to adjust to the new environment we're in," she said.

Because most nonprofits spend money the year after they earn it, or budget according to a three-year average, even when the economy does pick up, the recovery for charities will take longer, she said.

Osili said it could take donors as many as four years to return to pre-recession giving levels, in part because it takes a while for individuals and corporations to regain confidence in their own financial stability.

Jon Fine, CEO of the United Way of King County, Wash., said the nonprofit groups his organization supports through its fundraising have had at least three down years because of the recession.

In fiscal 2011, the Seattle-based United Way experienced its first up year since fiscal 2007, with donations of $119 million compared to $100 million in fiscal 2010. That's still below the $124 million total for 2007.

"I think it's less about a clear indication that the economy is improving, and it's more about individuals and corporations are willing to support proven programs that get results," Fine said.

His organization has had a lot of success attracting money for a relatively new program that helps kids from low-income families prepare for kindergarten, with donations of $10 million in fiscal 2011.

Other Seattle charities give a mixed report of their fundraising successes.

"Some are up and some are down," Fine said, adding that needs continue to be high and fundraising isn't enough to make up for government cutbacks.

The year isn't over, however, and some charities are still hoping for a holiday surprise. A recent random national survey of the general public found some potential for hope. Fifty-one percent of people questioned by Harris Interactive in a random telephone survey said they expected to give a charitable gift as a holiday present.

That survey, paid for by Federal Way, Wash., based nonprofit World Vision and conducted at the end of October, also found about seven in 10 adults plan to increase their charitable giving once the economy improves.

World Vision reports its own donation income is growing, with sales of its holiday gift catalog up every year of the recession, said Traci Coker, director of the holiday fundraiser at the religious nonprofit that focuses on international aid.

Corporate giving seems to be picking up a bit as well, said Jean Ellis, vice president for development and membership at the Denver Zoo. The zoo just received a $5.4 million gift from Toyota for naming rights to a new 10 acre elephant exhibit.

"We've had an enormously successful 2011," Coker said. "Hopefully that means things are turning around for everybody."

Polemical journalist and atheist Christopher Hitchens dead at 62 (Reuters)

WASHINGTON (Reuters) ? British-born journalist and atheist intellectual Christopher Hitchens, who made the United States his home and backed the 2003 U.S. invasion of Iraq, died on Thursday at the age of 62.

Hitchens died in Houston of pneumonia, a complication of cancer of the esophagus, Vanity Fair magazine said.

"Christopher Hitchens - the incomparable critic, masterful rhetorician, fiery wit, and fearless bon vivant - died today at the age of 62," Vanity Fair said.

A heavy smoker and drinker, Hitchens cut short a book tour for his memoir "Hitch 22" last year to undergo chemotherapy after being diagnosed with cancer.

As a journalist, war correspondent and literary critic, Hitchens carved out a reputation for barbed repartee, scathing critiques of public figures and a fierce intelligence.

In his 2007 book "God Is Not Great: How Religion Poisons Everything," Hitchens took on major religions with his trenchant atheism. He argued that religion was the source of all tyranny and that many of the world's evils have been done in the name of religion.

The son of a British naval officer, Hitchens studied at Oxford University and worked as literary critic for the New Statesman magazine in London before moving to New York to work as a journalist in 1981. He settled in Washington the following year, initially as correspondent for the left-wing magazine The Nation. He retained his British citizenship when he became an American citizen in 2007.

Hitchens was not one to mince words. In his book on Bill Clinton "No one left to lie to", he called the former U.S. president a "rapist" and a "con man." He once referred to Mother Teresa of Calcutta as a "fanatical Albanian dwarf."

The author of 25 books - including works on Thomas Jefferson, Thomas Paine and George Orwell - and countless articles and columns, Hitchens never lost his biting humor.

"I'm a member of a cancer elite. I rather look down on people with lesser cancers," Hitchens said in an interview with CBS "60 Minutes" aired on March 6, 2011.

In a 2010 interview with Reuters, Hitchens dismissed criticism that he moved from left to right and helped former U.S. President George W. Bush sell the 2003 war with Iraq to the American public with what turned out to be bad intelligence about weapons of mass destruction.

"Saddam was an enemy of the civilized world and he should have been taken out a long time before," Hitchens said of Iraqi leader Saddam Hussein. "I have no regrets about that at all."

The 2001 attacks on the United States by Islamic fundamentalists in hijacked passenger planes made Hitchens ever more critical of the role of religion in the world, and led him to appreciate the merits of American democracy.

"I am absolutely convinced that the main source of hatred in the world is religion, and organized religion," he wrote.

Factbox: Key quotes from Republican presidential debate (Reuters)

WASHINGTON (Reuters) ? Republican presidential hopefuls competing to challenge U.S. President Barack Obama in 2012 faced off in a debate in Iowa on Thursday, where the state-by-state Republican nominating contest kicks off in less than three weeks.

Here are some of their main quotes.

NEWT GINGRICH, FORMER SPEAKER OF THE HOUSE OF

REPRESENTATIVES

Defending his merit as front-runner:

"I believe I can debate Barack Obama and I think in seven three-hour debates Barack Obama will not have a leg to stand on."

Before answering a question on the Keystone pipeline:

"You know I sometimes get accused of using language that's too strong. So I've been standing here editing. I'm very concerned about not appearing to be zany."

On Michele Bachmann saying he supported partial-birth abortion:

"I have consistently opposed partial birth abortion. I in fact would like to see us go much further than that and eliminate abortions as a choice ... as president I would defund planned parenthood and shift the money to pay for adoption services."

MITT ROMNEY, FORMER MASSACHUSETTS GOVERNOR

On how he compares with Gingrich:

"I spent my life in the private sector. I can debate President Obama based upon that understanding. I'll have credibility on the economy when he doesn't. I know what it takes to get this economy going. The president doesn't."

Complaining that Obama asked Iran to give back a downed U.S. drone:

"A foreign policy based on pretty please? You got to be kidding."

Defending past statements about illegal immigrants:

"Get in line behind everyone else. My view is: people who've come here illegally, we welcome you to apply, but you must get in the back of the line."

On changing his stance on gay rights and abortion:

"I am firmly in support of people not being discriminated against based upon their sexual orientation. At the same time, I oppose same-sex marriage. With regards to abortion, I changed my mind ... My experience in life ... has told me that sometimes I was wrong. Where I was wrong I tried to correct myself."

MICHELE BACHMANN, U.S. REPRESENTATIVE FROM MINNESOTA

On Gingrich's work for mortgage giant Freddie Mac:

"Evidence is that Speaker Gingrich took 1.6 million dollars. You don't need to be within the technical definition of being a lobbyist to still be influence-peddling with senior Republicans."

"Speaker Gingrich said that he would actively support and campaign for Republicans who got behind the barbaric practice of partial birth abortions ... What virtue is there in tolerating infanticide?"

RON PAUL, U.S. REPRESENTATIVE FROM TEXAS

"I would be a different kind of president. I wouldn't be looking for more power. I as the president wouldn't want to run the world."

On Bachmann calling for stronger U.S. action on Iran:

"You're trying to dramatize this that we have to go and treat Iran like we've treated Iraq ... You cannot solve these problems with war."

On whether he would support the eventual nominee:

"Anybody up here can probably beat Obama."

JON HUNTSMAN, FORMER UTAH GOVERNOR

On the state of the country:

"We have been kicked around as people. We are getting screwed as Americans."

RICK PERRY, TEXAS GOVERNOR

On his poor debate performances

"I hope I am the Tim Tebow of the Iowa caucuses. There were a lot of folks who said Tim Tebow would not be very good professional quarterback," he said.

On Washington deadlock:

"That's the reason I've called for a part-time Congress. Cut their pay in half. Send them home. Let them get a job like everybody else back home has."

Cancer from fetal exposure to carcinogens depends on dose, timing

ScienceDaily (Dec. 15, 2011) ? The cancer-causing potential of fetal exposure to carcinogens can vary substantially, a recent study suggests, causing different types of problems much later in life depending on the stage of pregnancy when the fetus is exposed.

The research sheds further light on the way in which toxic damage early in life can later manifest themselves as cancer, due to "epigenetic" changes in cells. It was done by scientists in the Linus Pauling Institute at Oregon State University, and other institutions, in laboratory studies with mice.

In this study, published in the journal Cancer Letters, mice received four separate doses of a carcinogen commonly found in air pollutants or other combustion products. As a result, they had triple the level of ovarian cancer at the rodent equivalent of middle age. About 80 percent of them also got lung cancer, and many of the male mice had abnormally small testes -- a phenomenon not seen before.

In previous research, by contrast, the same amount of this carcinogen given in a single dose had caused a much higher rate of T-cell lymphoma, a type of blood cancer, which this study found to almost disappear when the carcinogen exposure was spread out over time. Liver cancer also was largely absent.

"There's still a lot of uncertainty about how the fetus responds to carcinogens and at what points in time it is most vulnerable," said David Williams, a professor of environmental and molecular toxicology at OSU.

"We know it's far more sensitive than adults for several reasons, including faster cell division and the lack of protective detoxifying enzymes," he said. "But it's interesting that the timing of fetal exposure makes such a difference in which organs are targeted. These results were somewhat surprising."

The mice in these experiments were exposed to one type of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon, a group of compounds commonly produced by everything from coal combustion to automobile exhaust. The levels of carcinogen the mice received were far higher than humans would face in a normal environment.

In the research, tracking with radioactive labeling showed that the carcinogens clearly made their way into the mouse fetuses, although at about 10 percent of the tissue concentration of those in the mother. The study was supported by the National Institutes of Health, and included collaborators from OSU and the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory.

Increasing amounts of research are being done on PAHs, which are associated with the burning of fossil fuels such as coal and petroleum, and may be on the rise in some areas, particularly China, Williams said. They can also get into soils, be taken up by plants and make their way into the human food chain.

The types of cancer that these carcinogens can cause in animal models include lymphoma and leukemia, and cancer is the number one cause of disease-related death in children. Epidemiological studies have shown that exposure of pregnant women to carcinogens such as cigarette smoke enhances the risk for offspring to develop a number of cancers.

"The fetal basis of adult disease is relevant to a number of chronic diseases in humans, including diabetes, asthma, cardiovascular disease and cancer," the researchers wrote in their report, "as well as neurological and behavior toxicities."

Research such as this, scientists say, suggests that a healthy diet is important during pregnancy, including a wide range of fruits and vegetables. Cruciferous vegetables such as broccoli and cauliflower, in particular, have high levels of some compounds believed to help protect against cancer.

Equity mutual funds: Investors pull money out

Equity mutual funds lost a net $16.1 billion in November. Foreign equity mutual funds lost $2.6 billion.?

Investors pulled cash out of stock?mutual?funds?for the seventh month in a row, as the European debt crisis continued to drive U.S. market volatility in November.

Investors withdrew a net $16.1 billion from U.S. stock?funds?last month, extending a string that began in May, industry consultant Strategic Insight said on Monday.

Stock?funds?attracted new cash during the first four months of this year, on the heels of strong market gains in late 2010. But the market was dominated this summer and fall by fears that Europe's debt crisis was getting impossible to contain.

As the continent's leaders struggled to come up with a debt-control plan, U.S. stocks again followed a volatile path last month. The Standard & Poor's 500 index slid about 9 percent in mid-November before recovering most of its gain to finish down less than 1 percent for the month.

"With the market still gyrating, investors still lack enthusiasm" for U.S. stock?funds, said Avi Nachmany, research director with New York-based Strategic Insight.

Through November, investors withdrew a net $65 billion from stock?funds. That exceeds the full-year total of 2010, when they pulled a net $49 billion from stock?funds. Investing has taken a more conservative turn since the financial crisis of 2008, with money consistently flowing out of stock?funds, and bond?funds?continuing to attract new cash.

Other details of how investors moved their money in November:

? Foreign stock?funds: Investors withdrew a net $2.6 billion from these?funds, as debt troubles in Europe and slowing economic growth in China continued to depress stock prices in many foreign markets. Through November, investors have deposited a net $45 billion into foreign?funds, reflecting expectations that China and other emerging markets such as India and Brazil continue to have good long-term prospects.

? Bond?funds: Investors deposited a net $11.9 billion in November. About $9 billion in new cash was added to taxable bond?funds, a category that includes corporate bonds. About $2.9 billion was deposited last month into municipal bond?funds, which buy the debt of state and local governments. Year-to-date, bond?funds?have attracted nearly $104 billion in new cash.

? Money-market?funds: A net $42 billion was deposited into these?funds?last month, marking a reversal from the $21 billion in net withdrawals in October. Strategic Insight said investors appeared to increasingly view money-market?funds?as a safety net from stock market volatility. They're designed to be safe harbors where investors can temporarily park cash and quickly access it when needed. Net withdrawals from money?fundstotal $173 billion year-to-date. Their appeal has dimmed because returns have been barely above zero since early 2009.

? Exchange-traded?funds: Investors deposited a net $5 billion into ETFs, which bundle together investments in a particular market index. Unlike?mutual?funds, they can be traded during daily sessions just like stocks. ETFs continue to grow much faster than?mutual?funds, with year-to-date net deposits of nearly $94 billion. At that rate, ETFs could end 2011 with more than $100 billion in new cash for the fifth year in row.

Palm-sized baby among the world's smallest (AP)

LOS ANGELES ? At birth, Melinda Star Guido was so tiny she could fit into the palm of her doctor's hand. Weighing just 9 1/2 ounces ? less than a can of soda ? she is among the smallest babies ever born in the world.

Most infants her size don't survive, but doctors are preparing to send her home by New Year's.

Melinda was born premature at 24 weeks in late August and is believed to be the second-smallest baby to survive in the U.S. and third smallest in the world. She spent the early months cocooned in an incubator in the neonatal intensive care unit in Los Angeles.

Despite hurdles, Melinda lived to her original Thursday due date. Doctors say it is too early to say how she will fare developmentally and physically when she grows up.

For now, her 22-year-old mother sits at her bedside almost every day and stays overnight whenever she can.

On Wednesday, Haydee Ibarra caressed Melinda through the portholes of the incubator where nurses pinned up a homemade sign bearing her name. Now 3 1/2 months old and weighing 4 pounds, Melinda gripped Ibarra's pinky finger and yawned.

"Melinda, Melinda," she cooed at her daughter dressed in a polka dot onesie. "You're awake today."

During her pregnancy, Ibarra suffered from high blood pressure, which can be dangerous for mother and fetus. She was transferred from a hospital near her San Fernando Valley home to the county's flagship hospital, which was better equipped to handle high-risk pregnancies.

There was a problem with the placenta, the organ that nourishes the developing fetus. The fetus, however, was not getting proper nutrition, blood and oxygen. Doctors knew Melinda would weigh less than a pound, but they were surprised at how small and fragile she was.

"The first few weeks, it was touch and go. None of us thought the baby was going to make it," said Dr. Rangasamy Ramanathan, who oversees premature infants at the Los Angeles County-USC Medical Center.

Even if she survived, doctors told Ibarra and her husband Yovani Guido, children born this extremely premature can have developmental delays and impairments such as blindness, deafness or cerebral palsy.

Ibarra, who previously had a stillborn, told doctors to do whatever necessary to help her baby.

"They said, `We'll take the chance. Please try.' So we said. `OK we'll try,'" Ramanathan recalled.

Melinda was delivered by cesarean section at 24 weeks and was immediately transferred to the NICU where a team of doctors and nurses kept watch around the clock. Infants born before 37 weeks are considered premature.

Melinda was kept insulated in an incubator and was hooked up to a machine to aid her breathing. She got nutrition through a feeding tube. Her mother said her skin felt like plastic because it was so thin.

"It takes a lot of good care and a lot of good luck. Most of them don't survive," said pediatrician Dr. Edward Bell of the University of Iowa who keeps an online database of the world's smallest surviving babies who were less than a pound at birth.

The list currently contains 126 babies dating back to 1936. Since submission is voluntary, it does not represent all survivors.

Ten babies weighing less than a pound were born last year and survived. Melinda joins three other tiny survivors delivered this year in Berkeley; Seoul, South Korea; and Iowa City, Iowa. All are bigger than Melinda, who is not eligible to be listed until she gets discharged.

Most tiny babies who survive tend to be female. That's because female fetuses mature faster than males of the same gestational age. Having more developed lungs and other vital organs increases odds of survival.

Bell published a study last year that found many survivors struggle with health and learning problems. For those for whom growth data are available, many are short and underweight for their age.

There are some success stories.

The smallest surviving baby born weighing 9.2 ounces is now a healthy 7-year-old and another who weighed 9.9 ounces at birth is an honors college student studying psychology. Their progress was detailed in a study published this week in the journal Pediatrics by doctors at Loyola University Medical Center in Illinois where the girls were born.

In the past three years, Los Angeles County-USC Medical Center cared for two other babies with extremely low birth weight who survived, but Melinda holds the record at the hospital.

Prematurity comes with high costs. Ramanathan estimates it costs $3,000 to $5,000 a day to care for a premature infant.

A month after birth, Melinda was treated for an eye disorder that's common in premature babies. She faced her biggest test last month when she underwent surgery to close an artery that usually seals after birth.

Ybarra held her daughter for the first time after the surgery. Before that, she could only touch her through the incubator.

The next challenge is learning to bottle feed before discharge. Ramanathan predicted at least another two-week stay, dashing her parents' hopes of taking her home by Christmas.

Ramanathan said doctors don't know how Melinda will fare when she's older. Since she did not have major complications such as bleeding in the brain, he held out hope.

Melinda can breathe by herself, but still uses an oxygen tube as a precaution. On Wednesday, an ophthalmologist checked out her eyes and said everything looked good.

After the checkup, Ibarra lifted Melinda out of the incubator and sat in a rocking chair, cradling her.
