Important Information About The Wine And Spirits Store Newton ...

By Casandra Cotton

Towns of the world host a huge number of shops, stores, clubs and other selling places for alcoholic drinks. It is not different with wine and spirits store Newton as the well stocked shelves and good service attracts customers. The business picks up over weekends, most evenings and festive seasons with a lot of benefits being experienced by the sellers.

The term alcoholic beverage is used to refer to wine, beer or spirits which contain alcohol. The drinks are what are taken by people because alcohol is just content. Companies that manufacture this are legal and fully licensed. They have to adhere with the regulations of relevant bodies to ensure they are on the right track. They always state the associated dangers of the drinks to make people decide if to take or not.

Alcoholic beverages like spirits, beer and wine have complex process of production. The ingredients of each are fermented depending on the intended strength of each of them. Wine which is made from fruits is fermented for longer to achieve its desired effects. Spirits are distilled because they have to have high percentage of alcohol in them. Beer is made from barley and malt.

Alcohol intake is a common exercise among revelers and every one of them has various reasons for the same. Most people take it for the sole purpose of entertainment. They use it as a pastime thing when meeting friends and attending events. It is also associated with celebrations like weddings, graduations and awarding functions.

It can also be used for the purpose of relieving stress. This means that when some people have troubles and need to take time off them or forget for a while, they turn to alcohol. It works in that way but it is a short term solution. It can be said that it is a way of passing time so that the real solution can be found and to reduce pain in cases where it was hurting.

The problem is when it comes to excessive alcohol intake with it becoming a routine which creates alcoholics. Alcohol then becomes their helper and consoler. It becomes so dangerous when it affects the appetite of the person and their whole system functioning. To curb it, they are helped through rehab centers, which take some time with the consent of the victim of course and they recover eventually.

Intake of alcohol has various effects to a human body because its contents are intended to trigger functionality of a body system. Most commonly is that it causes diseases. Most commonly being liver related because of the functions of a liver to the body. Also some kidney failures and breakdown of the system as a whole are experienced.

It is the same in other stores as the wine and spirits store Newton. They are open on the right hours and they stock the legal drinks as per the requirement. Being licensed means they are legally operating and are responsible for their clients. That is why they go ahead to offer food and bed services when the need for that arises among their customers.

CHICAGO (AP) ? For the first time in a quarter century, Chicago teachers walked out of the classroom Monday, taking a bitter contract dispute over evaluations and job security to the streets of the nation's third-largest city ? and to a national audience ? less than a week after most schools opened for fall.

The walkout forced hundreds of thousands of parents to scramble for a place to send idle children and created an unwelcome political distraction for Mayor Rahm Emanuel. In a year when labor unions have been losing ground nationwide, the implications were sure to extend far beyond Chicago, particularly for districts engaged in similar debates.

"This is a long-term battle that everyone's going to watch," said Eric Hanuskek, a senior fellow in education at the Hoover Institution of Stanford University. "Other teachers unions in the United States are wondering if they should follow suit."

The union had vowed to strike Monday if there was no agreement on a new contract, even though the district had offered a 16 percent raise over four years and the two sides had essentially agreed on a longer school day. With an average annual salary of $76,000, Chicago teachers are among the highest-paid in the nation, according to the National Council on Teacher Quality.

But negotiators were still divided on job security measures and a system for evaluating teachers that hinged in part on students' standardized test scores.

The strike in a district where the vast majority of students are poor and minority put Chicago at the epicenter of a struggle between big cities and teachers unions for control of schools.

Emanuel, who has sought major reforms while also confronting the district's $700 million budget shortfall, acknowledged his own fight with the union, even as he urged a quick resolution.

"Don't take it out on the kids of Chicago if you have a problem with me," he told reporters Monday.

As negotiators resumed talks, thousands of teachers and their supporters took over several downtown streets during the Monday evening rush. Police secured several blocks around district headquarters as the crowds marched and chanted.

The protesters planned to rally through the evening at an event that resembled a family street fair. Balloons, American flags and homemade signs hung above the crowd.

Teacher Kimberly Crawford said she was most concerned about issues such as class size and the lack of air conditioning.

"It's not just about the raise," she said. "I've worked without a raise for two years."

The strike quickly became part of the presidential campaign. Republican candidate Mitt Romney said teachers were turning their backs on students and Obama was siding with the striking teachers in his hometown.

Obama's top spokesman said the president has not taken sides but is urging both the sides to settle quickly.

Emanuel, who just agreed to take a larger role in fundraising for Obama's re-election, dismissed Romney's comments as "lip service."

But one labor expert said that a major strike unfolding in the shadow of the November election could only hurt a president who desperately needs the votes of workers, including teachers, in battleground states.

"I can't imagine this is good for the president and something he can afford to have go on for more than a week," said Robert Bruno, a professor of labor and employment relations at the University of Illinois at Chicago.

For two decades, contract agreements have slowly eroded teachers' voices, Bruno said.

"But this signals to other collective bargaining units that the erosion of teachers' rights isn't inevitable. They (the union members) are telling them, 'You don't have to roll over."

The union has done so in large part by making the most of one of the biggest sources of friction: teacher evaluations.

In Chicago, union President Karen Lewis suggested the city's proposal could put thousands of teachers' careers at risk because the evaluation system relies too heavily on standardized test scores and does not take into account such factors as poverty, violence and homelessness.

Teachers "have no control over those scores," said union coordinator John Kugler.

The union feared the evaluations could result in 6,000 teachers losing their jobs within two years. City officials disagreed and said the union has not explained how it reached that conclusion.

The strike involving more than 25,000 teachers meant no school for nearly 400,000 students and raised the worries of parents who were concerned not just about their kids' education but their safety. Gang violence in some parts of the city has spiked in recent months.

"They're going to lose learning time," said Beatriz Fierro, whose daughter is in the fifth grade. "And if the whole afternoon they're going to be free, it's bad. Of course you're worried."

In response, Police Superintendent Garry McCarthy said he would take officers off desk duty and deploy them to deal with any protests as well as the scores of students who might be roaming the streets.

The district staffed 144 schools with non-union workers and central office employees for half the day so students who are dependent on school-provided free meals would have a place to eat breakfast and lunch.

One after another, parents refused to leave their children at unfamiliar schools where they would be thrown together with kids and supervising adults they may never have met.

April Logan arrived at the Benjamin Mays Academy on the city's South Side with the intention on dropping her 5-year-old daughter off but then thought better of it.

"I don't understand this, my baby just got into school," she said, just before turning around and walking home with the child.

Some students expressed anger, blaming the district for interrupting their education.

"They're not hurting the teachers. They're hurting us," said Ta'Shara Edwards, a student at Robeson High School on the city's South Side. She said her mother made her come to class to do homework so she "wouldn't suck up her light bill."

However, many parents appeared sympathetic.

Sarah Allen, whose daughter is a seventh-grader, said she saw Emanuel at the Democratic National Convention "listening to Bill Clinton talk about compromise and cooperation."

But Emanuel seems to have "built a lifestyle around being a bully," she said. "And it's one thing to be a chief of staff and another to be a leader."

Emanuel, who has engaged in a public and often contentious battle with the union, is not personally negotiating, but he's monitoring the talks through aides.

Not long after his election, the mayor's office rescinded 4 percent raises for teachers. Then he asked the union to reopen its contract and accept 2 percent pay raises in exchange for lengthening the school day for students by 90 minutes, a request the union turned down.

Emanuel, who promised a longer school day during his campaign, attempted to go around the union by asking teachers at individual schools to waive the contract and add 90 minutes to the day. He halted the effort after being challenged by the union before the Illinois Educational Labor Relations Board.

The district and union agreed in July on a deal to implement the longer school day, crafting a plan to hire back 477 teachers who had been laid off rather than pay regular teachers more to work longer hours. That raised hopes the contract dispute would be settled soon, but bargaining stalled on the other issues.

Tweet This Prairie du Sac, Wisconsin (July 26, 2012) -- Innovative Gutter Solutions, a Wisconsin-based company that offers top-quality gutter and siding products, is using the Siding-Master system for vinyl siding installations. Siding-Master is an effective solution to problems associated with nailing, stapling, and aligning vinyl siding. As an added benefit, it also provides a rain screen.

Siding-Master holds vinyl siding in place as it is installed directly on the walls, and siding is attached to it. Siding panels, hence, can be installed cleanly despite the structural flaws of wall exteriors. Siding-Master can be fitted onto most facades, including those made of house wrap, stucco, and more.

Because it helps form a space between the siding panels and the exterior walls, Siding-Master also helps create a rain screen. A rain screen is one of the many benefits that come with Siding-Master. It prevents water leaks and allows air to flow freely in a wall, helping improve ventilation, reduce moisture levels, prevent mold growth, and keeping walls cool to reduce energy costs.

Innovative Gutter Solutions is a supply company for home improvement businesses, owned by Scott Frey. The company has been providing top-quality gutter and siding products such as gutter protection, gutter accessories, and rain screens since for over a decade. Under Frey's guidance, highly trained professionals strictly follow standards to ensure their installation projects can withstand the elements for a long time.

The gutter systems offered by Innovative Gutter Solutions include Absolute Gutter, BigMouth, LeakProof, SnapLock, and TipLok. The company also offers sidings that feature rainscreens and more.

EU may impose new Syria sanctions as Assad clings to power

NICOSIA/PAPHOS, Cyprus (Reuters) - The European Union may impose new sanctions on the Syrian government of President Bashar al-Assad as soon as next month, EU diplomats said on Saturday.

Belgian Foreign Minister Didier Reynders said his EU counterparts meeting in Cyprus had agreed new sanctions were needed and had tasked Catherine Ashton, the bloc's foreign policy chief, with preparing suggestions for talks next month.

"We need to go further in (targeting Syria's) financial sector and commercial activities," Reynders told Reuters after the meeting in a luxury resort in Cyprus - less than 400 kilometers (250 miles) from Damascus.

The agreement comes amid frustration that Assad is clinging to power despite a 17-month uprising against him and several rounds of EU sanctions. These include an arms embargo and travel bans and asset freezes on around 50 businesses and 150 people.

Ashton said the bloc would also boost its efforts to help refugees and other victims of the Syrian conflict and support Lakhdar Brahimi, the new U.N.-Arab League special envoy.

"Sanctions are under review," Ashton told a news conference in Nicosia, the capital of Cyprus, after the meeting.

"Not only to consider whether more sanctions should be taken but to make sure that the enforcement of sanctions is done properly and any ability to evade them is dealt with."

Some 20,000 people have been killed in the conflict, according to U.N. figures. Ashton cited a figure of 230,000 people who she said had fled the country, mostly to Turkey, Jordan, Iraq and Lebanon.

LACK OF OPTIONS

The EU executive on Friday said it would donate 50 million euros ($64 million) to help Syrian civilians, adding to the 69 million it has already contributed.

Swedish Foreign Minister Carl Bildt warned it would be tough to find areas of the economy where sanctions could have a strong impact.

"There is very little we can do," Bildt told reporters.

One other option would be to create a buffer zone shielded from air strikes but the EU executive has said that would be impractical without a U.N. Security Council resolution authorizing intervention. Russia and China have so far vetoed attempts to pass tough Security Council sanctions against Assad.

French Foreign Minister Laurent Fabius said a week ago that France and Turkey had identified areas in the north and south of Syria that had escaped Assad's control, creating a chance for local communities to govern themselves without feeling they had to flee to neighboring countries.

Other EU ministers were reluctant to support him for now.

"We need to go back to the capitals and see how we feel about it," Polish Foreign Minister Radoslaw Sikorski said.

"Nobody knows what to do about Syria, other than try to convince the Syrian opposition to be better united," he said.

Testosterone marketing frenzy draws skepticism

(AP) ? "Are you falling asleep after dinner?"

"Do you have a decrease in libido?"

"Have you noticed a recent deterioration in your ability to play sports?"

"It could be Low-T."

Welcome to the latest big marketing push by U.S. drug companies. In this case, it's a web page for Abbott Laboratories' Androgel, a billion-dollar selling testosterone gel used by millions of American men struggling with the symptoms of growing older that are associated with low testosterone, such as poor sex drive, weight gain and fatigue.

Androgel is one of a growing number of prescription gels, patches and injections aimed at boosting the male hormone that begins to decline after about age 40. Drugmakers and some doctors claim testosterone therapy can reverse some of the signs of aging ? even though the safety and effectiveness of such treatments is unclear.

"The problem is that we don't have any evidence that prescribing testosterone to older men with relatively low testosterone levels does any good," says Dr. Sergei Romashkan, who oversees clinical trials for the National Institute on Aging, a part of the National Institutes of Health conglomerate of research centers.

Low testosterone is the latest example of a once-natural part of getting old that has become a target for medical treatment. Bladder problems, brittle bones and hot flashes have followed a similar path: from inconvenient facts of life, to ailments that can be treated with drugs. The rise of such therapies is being fueled by both demographics and industry marketing.

Baby boomers are living longer and looking for ways to deal with the infirmities of old age: Life expectancy in the U.S. today is 78 years, up from 69 years a half-century ago. And companies have stepped up their marketing to the older crowd: Spending on print and television ads promoting testosterone by firms like Abbott and Eli Lilly has risen more than 170 percent in the last three years to more than $14 million in 2011, according to advertising tracker Kantar Media.

Doctors say that's led to an increase in men seeking treatment for low testosterone. Prescriptions for the hormone have increased nearly 90 percent over the last five years, according to IMS Health. Last year, global sales reached $1.9 billion.

"People are living longer and want to be more active," says Dr. Spyros Mezitis, a hormone specialist at Lenox Hill Hospital in New York. "They no longer consider that because they're older they shouldn't have sexual intercourse."

Former marathon runner Damon Lease, 50, had been complaining of low energy and depression, for which his doctor prescribed a combination of four psychiatric drugs. But since he started taking twice-a-week testosterone injections in May, he says he's been able to stop taking two of the medications and hopes to eliminate them completely. He says he has more energy, improved mood and concentration.

"I spent 27 years running long distances, I like biking, I like hiking, and I guess every guy wants to have an active sex life ... I want to keep doing those things as long as I can," says Lease, who works as a software company executive. "I feel 20 years younger."

MASS-MARKET HORMONE

Despite its rising popularity, testosterone therapy is not completely new. Testosterone injections were long used for men with hypogonadism, a disorder defined by low testosterone caused by injury or infection to the reproductive or hormonal organs.

But the latest marketing push by drugmakers is for easy-to-use gels and patches that are aimed at a much broader population of otherwise healthy older men with low testosterone, or androgen deficiency. The condition is associated with a broad range of unpleasant symptoms ranging from insomnia to depression to erectile dysfunction. Drug companies peg this group at about 15 million American men, though federal scientists do not use such estimates.

Watson Pharmaceuticals now markets its Androderm patch, which slowly releases testosterone into the bloodstream. Abbott has its gel that can be applied to the shoulders and arms. And Eli Lilly's Axiron is an underarm gel that rolls on like deodorant. Androderm, launched last year, had $87 million in sales, and Axiron, which was launched in 2010, had sales of $48 million last year.

"All of a sudden you've got these big players with a lot of money using consumer directed marketing to change the landscape," said Dr. Natan Bar-Chama, a male reproductive specialist at Mount Sinai Hospital in New York. "They see the potential, they see the market growth annually and it's very impressive."

But government researchers worry that medical treatments have gotten ahead of the science.

Male testosterone is mainly produced in the testes and affects muscle mass, sperm production and various sexual characteristics. The hormone can easily be checked with a blood test, but doctors can't agree on what constitutes a low reading in older men. Typical testosterone levels for younger men range between 300 and 1,000 nanograms per deciliter, but once levels begin dropping there is little consensus on what makes a "normal number."

Some doctors believe testosterone levels below 300 lead to sexual dysfunction in older men, but the rule does not cover all cases. A 2010 study by researchers at the University of Manchester and other European institutions found that 25 percent of men with testosterone levels above that threshold had the same sexual problems used to diagnose low testosterone. Adding to the ambiguity is that testosterone levels change by the hour, so a man who takes a blood test for testosterone in the morning may get a completely different reading when tested in the afternoon.

SAFETY CONCERNS

Adding to the confusion over what defines "low testosterone," there's not much understanding of whether testosterone replacement therapy actually improves men's symptoms. Evidence of the benefits of testosterone is mixed, and the potential health risks are serious. The largest study conducted to date, a 2008 trial involving 230 patients in the Netherlands, found no improvement in muscle strength, cognitive thinking, bone density or overall quality of life among men taking testosterone. Muscle mass increased 1.2 percent, but not enough to improve physical mobility.

The National Institute on Aging is currently conducting an 800-man trial to definitively answer whether testosterone therapy improves walking ability, sexual function, energy, memory and blood cell count in men 65 years and older. But those results aren't expected until 2014.

In addition to concerns about testosterone's effectiveness, the long-term side effects of the hormone are not entirely understood because most trials to date have only followed patients for a few months. But the most serious risks include heart problems and prostate cancer. In fact, all testosterone drugs carry a warning that the hormone should not be given to men who have a personal or family history of prostate cancer.

In 2010, researchers at Boston University's school of medicine halted a large study of testosterone in senior men because patients taking the hormone were five times more likely to suffer a serious heart event, including congestive heart failure, than those taking placebos. A review of 19 testosterone trials in 2006 found that prostate cancer was significantly higher among men taking testosterone.

Also in 2006, the Endocrine Society published the first physician guidelines for prescribing testosterone for men with androgen deficiency. All six of the co-authors had received consulting fees or research funding from drug makers that market testosterone. Despite those ties, the authors took a cautious tone, stressing the difficulty of accurately diagnosing low testosterone and acknowledging that they were unable to reach an agreement about when doctors should begin therapy. They also recommend doctors have an "explicit discussion of the uncertainty about the risks and benefits of testosterone therapy."

History has shown that hormone replacement therapy can be dangerous. That hit home for women in 2002 when a landmark study shook up the conventional wisdom about the benefits of estrogen replacement therapy for menopause, the period when women stop producing eggs and the hormone estrogen. The federal study found that women taking hormone pills were more likely to suffer heart attacks, breast cancer and strokes. Doctors now generally recommend hormones only to relieve severe menopause symptoms ? in the lowest possible dose and for the shortest possible time.

In the case of testosterone, Abbott Laboratories says Androgel and other drugs like it are an important treatment option for men with low levels of the hormone. But the company acknowledges that more study is needed.

"Abbott believes that the long-term effects of testosterone replacement therapy should be studied, which is why we continually fund and support additional clinical trials, such as the National Institute of Aging's testosterone trial," the company says.

Doctors who prescribe testosterone say more men should be talking to their doctors about the hormone. "If an older man feels excessively tired or his erectile dysfunction has worsened he should be asking 'Is there something wrong with my testosterone?'" says Mezitis of Lenox Hill Hospital. "The awareness should be much broader than it is at this point."

Even critics of the testosterone craze acknowledge that the interest in anti-aging products may be inevitable as life expectancy increases. But they say doctors can do more to help seniors by focusing on lifestyle adjustments that keep them connected to their friends and family, rather than prescribing drugs.

"We really 'medicalize' seniors so much that they think the secret always has to be scientific," says Dr. Nortin Hadler of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, who has written four books on excessive medical care. "We need another perspective to understand the secrets to healthy aging, which by and large are not pills."

Spain official sees $125 BN as enough for banks

MADRID (AP) ? Spain's Economy Minister says he doesn't expect his country's banks to need all of the ?100 billion ($125.7 billion) being provided by the countries that use the euro to prevent the Spanish financial sector's collapse.

Spain's banks have an estimated ?184 billion in problematic real estate loans and investments following the collapse of the country's property market in 2008. The other 16 eurozone countries have set aside a rescue package for troubled Spanish lenders.

Economy Minister Luis de Guindos told Onda Cero radio Monday that, "In principle, it looks like not all of (the ?100 billion) will be used."

De Guindos said austerity policies being enacted by the government will be enough for Spain to meet its budget deficit target of 6.3 percent this year without additional measures.

Why Are Gold, Silver Mining Share Prices Not Moving Higher ...

Julian Phillips

http://www.silverbearcafe.com/private/08.12/miningshares.html

?The prime reason that institutional investors and wealthy retail investors are buying gold and silver mining shares now is that these will produce a greater total return than the gold and silver prices themselves.?

This is perhaps one of the most asked questions among gold investors today. But the answer is not a simple one. It goes to the basics of which people invest in gold in the first place and what form of gold they buy. In this, the first of a two part article, we delve deeper into this subject.

Who Buys Gold?

U.S. Demand

It?s so easy to become short-sighted in the different facets of the gold market. In the U.S., it?s easy to believe that gold price rises seen since 2005 are due to either the economic outlook of the U.S. or the strength and weakness of the USD. There?s no doubt that in the short term, gold price movements are driven by traders focused on the exchange rate between the dollar and the euro. But what gold are they buying?

The sophisticated trading operations and tools available in the developed world are able to discount such price moves quickly and dramatically, seemingly providing such gold and silver price dominance. Looked at on a day-to-day basis, the evidence of such dominance is overwhelming. The volumes of gold bought and sold daily are enormous. But are they buying the sort of gold that moves the gold price?
Traders on COMEX buy and sell derivatives in the form of Options and Futures contracts. This is not physical gold. Indeed COMEX officials informed us that only 5% of the volumes traded involve an actual transfer of physical gold.

While the SPDR gold Exchange Traded Fund holds in HSBC vaults more than 1,500 tonnes, only a few tonnes, on average, move each week, reducing the price impact of these investors considerably.

Institutions that do buy gold, allocate an amount to be invested in the gold sector. This amount has as its underlying motive to create profits from these investments. Under the usual risk-reward concept, with the objective of maximum total return, institutions will spread this allocation to the different aspects of the gold market. At times they may feel that the bullion price will produce the most short-term profits, so invest directly in physical gold, perhaps counter-balancing these positions with futures and options which adding a portion of trading to the portfolio. Long-term positions may well be taken in gold mining company shares, provided the higher returns justify the higher risk ? this includes the corporate risk and risk of higher costs of production cutting back potential profits. But it?s normal to spread the risk of gold shares with a physical gold position. The net result is that institutions may well hold only a 30 to 50% position in physical gold [of the amount allocated to gold investments], with the intention of holding these for the long-term. The result is that when one adds the buying and selling of all the gold instruments together over time and weighs them against the volume of physical gold buying and selling over time, the weight of short-term trading in its various forms, heavily outweighs that of physical gold buying, perhaps 10 to 1. Surprisingly this makes U.S. physical gold activity a tiny proportion of total gold-related investment and trading activity. After all, to the U.S. investor making a dollar profit from their gold dealings and not holding it for the long term, is the thrust of their activity. Gold bullion holding for the long-term is not their primary interest.

Overall, the U.S. accounts for +7% of world gold physical demand only, primarily for the jewelry sector. If it was not for the sophistication of its markets and measured on physical demand alone, the U.S. demand is insufficient to dominate the gold price. But the sheer volume of activity in the short-term does dominate the short-term price, but not the long-term price.

Of this total demand for gold in its various forms, what portion goes into gold mining shares? It is very small.

After the arrival of gold Exchange Traded Funds in the market even this amount was reduced considerably because, for the first time institutions could take positions that would affect the gold price itself as the buying of gold ETF shares caused a purchase of physical gold to happen. Gold share buying had zero affect on the gold price itself.

So the amount usually spent on gold shares dropped dramatically!

Emerging World Demand

Between 65% and 75% of the world?s demand for physical gold comes from the emerging world. One hundred per cent of this is for long-term financial security. Even recycled gold is sold with the intention of rebuying again either when the price is lower or when investors are able to afford to buy again. This applies both in China and in India. The investment attitude behind such buying is for the purpose of financial security.

It is both rare and insignificant for investors in the emerging world to buy gold mining shares or Futures & Options or the shares of gold Exchange Traded Funds. The emerging world sees these as speculative instruments related to gold and not gold itself. They are not interested in investing outside their world, usually.

The profit motive is virtually absent from these investors? minds. But when the money volumes spent by these investors is set against the money volumes of the developed world investors in gold instruments, it is tiny because they buy usually once for the long-term and rarely sell. But their demand is insistent and persistent over time. This is why their impact on the long-term gold price is so significant.

However, as to the shares of gold mining companies, the bulk of investors in the emerging world have little, to zero, money invested in them.

Central Bank Demand

The pattern of behavior of central banks is similar to that of the emerging world. They buy only gold bullion for the long-term and are not particularly interested in the price of gold itself only the number of ounces they hold. They have zero interest in buying the shares of gold mining companies.

Silver Prices and silver mining company shares

We?ve followed the silver price for some considerable time and seen that the silver price moves with the gold price, more on the rise and more on the fall, but they move together because they?re treated as a long-term investment that counters the falling value of currencies as a whole. We have no reason to see why this well established pattern change. Therefore it?s reasonable that we should talk about gold and silver shares together, in the context of this article.

Who Buys Gold and Silver Shares?

Apart from a small number of cosmopolitan investors in the emerging world, only investors in the sophisticated markets of the developed world invest in the shares of gold and silver mining companies. It?s quite sobering to realize this.

In the emerging world, the reasons for buying relate as much to ownership of those companies as to sound long-term investments. It is not part of their investment culture to try to profit from the gearing gold and silver mining company shares can offer.

The culture of short-term trading in the emerging world is related more to gambling than to wise investment trading and has not taken hold to nearly the same extent as it has in the developed world.

Institutional investors and the wealthy retail investor are among the buyers of gold and silver mining company shares. The criteria they use is only partially related to the price of gold and silver. The prime reason for them buying gold & silver mining shares now is that these will produce a greater total return than the gold and silver prices themselves. Why else would they take on the added risk that comes with these corporate investments?

Equities Have Added Risks & Costs

It is easy to assume that gold and silver mining shares will move with the gold and silver prices, but they haven?t. They have underperformed precious metal prices by a wide margin over the last few years.

We will go into more detail on why this is so in the next article we produce on the subject, but suffice it to say now that mining company shares come with a lot more baggage than just prices that dominate the performance of the companies.

Isaac remnants dump rain across Missouri, Illinois

As residents add up the damage from Isaac's nonstop rain, a half a million are still living without power. NBC's Gabe Gutierrez reports.

By NBC News staff and wire reports

The remnants of Hurricane Isaac were grinding slowing northward early on Saturday with its center now deep into Missouri and the heavy rain stretching for hundreds of miles east into Illinois amid reports of tornadoes and high winds, meteorologists said.

Drought-stricken areas of Missouri and Illinois were easily absorbing the rain Friday and the system was expected to soak the region deep into Sunday, said Jayson Gosselin, meteorologist with the National Weather Service's St. Louis-area office.

"We have gotten pretty widespread light to moderate rain that has piled up," Gosselin said. "The rain is certainly going to help our drought situation up here."

Most places in the area were reporting 1 to 3 inches of rain by late on Friday and were expected to see up to 5 inches of rain through Sunday, though some might see "upwards of 5, 6, 7 inches," Gosselin said.

Isaac outages keep heat on Louisianans; twister alerts inland

A wide swath of central Illinois from west to east was expected to receive similar amounts of rain as the system slowly passes through the state, the weather service said.

The weather service received reports of two tornadoes in Illinois and one in Missouri on Friday that caused what looked like fairly minor damage, Gosselin said. Two possible storm tracks will probably be surveyed on Saturday, he said.

Eric Gay / AP

Communities damaged and flooded by Isaac get food aid and a visit from a presidential nominee as they start to mop up.

The rain has been fairly consistent, and due to drought conditions and low river levels there have not been any reports of flash flooding or river flooding so far in the area, he said.

One woman's mission to help Isaac's victims

Fears of deluge
The slow-moving tropical depression dropped up to 8.5 inches of rain in Pine Bluff, Arkansas, where there were several flash flood watches and warnings on Friday. Many more Arkansas cities reported rain totaling 5 inches or more.

The system was expected to gradually turn more east from the Mississippi River valley into the Ohio River valley by Saturday night, bringing heavy rain into the central Appalachians by Monday and Tuesday.

Isaac pushes gas prices still higher for holiday weekend

Isaac could be blessing and curse in drought areas

Missouri and Illinois were both expected to see steady rain into Sunday, forecasters said.

State emergency agencies, city and county leaders and utility crews have been preparing for the deluge. In Indianapolis, a line of about 100 cars snaked from a Department of Public Works lot where free sandbags were being distributed Friday. Residents could pick up bags filled with 30 to 50 pounds of sand.

Jenny Bland, 50, of Indianapolis, waited in line more than 90 minutes so she could pick up bags for her family and elderly neighbors.

"People are taking this very seriously," Bland said.

Fears were well-founded in Arkansas, where some areas have had more than 6 inches of rain since Thursday, and thousands lost power. Tornado warnings were issued for several counties, but no touchdowns were confirmed late Friday and there were no reports of injuries or damage.

Brian Smith, senior forecaster for the National Weather Service in North Little Rock, said remnants of the hurricane were still affecting central and northeast Arkansas late Friday. Showers and thunderstorms were possible in the northern half of the state Saturday, he said.?

NBC's Brian Williams speaks with New Orleans Mayor Mitch Landrieu and Plaquemines Parish President Billy Nungesser.

Four deaths attributed to Isaac
At least four deaths were attributed to Isaac in the Gulf Coast. Residents were cleaning up on Friday, looking for electricity to be restored slowly and energy companies were getting ready to resume operating offshore rigs.

Isaac was the first hurricane to strike the United States this year and hit New Orleans almost exactly seven years after Hurricane Katrina devastated the city, causing an estimated 1,800 deaths.

Isaac caused widespread flooding and property damage in the U.S. Gulf Coast region. More than 500,000 homes and businesses remained without electricity across Louisiana, Mississippi and Arkansas on Friday afternoon.

The system lingered over New Orleans for the better part of two days, providing a first and successful test of the city's new $14.5 billion flood-control system assembled after Katrina. Areas outside those flood protections fared worse.

At least one levee was overtopped southwest of New Orleans, leaving some homes under 12 feet of water. New Orleans was struck by 20 inches of rain, many other locations in Louisiana and Mississippi logged more than 10 inches of rain.

Are You Trying Too Hard to Be Happy? - The Self Improvement Blog

By Georgiana Carollus -

Do you hold yourself to a measure of happiness that you think you need to obtain and maintain? Is trying to be happy adding to your stress level? Do you need some stress relief from your pursuit of happiness? A simple and effective way to increase your happiness is to broaden your definition of happiness to include the full range of your emotions.

Happiness seems to be the new thing today and there is a high premium placed on it. However, while there is a very real value in pursuing happiness, maintaining a constant happiness high is unrealistic. By over-valuing happiness, we run the danger of denying our other legitimate feelings.

When we insist on happiness we are judging our emotions as good or bad, acceptable or unacceptable. If we only choose happiness, we are refusing to embrace all the aspects and parts of ourselves that make up our wholeness. All feelings, including happiness, sadness, anger, fear, joy, grief ? every feeling! ? is impermanent. Every feeling is there so we can experience life to the fullest.

As humans, we naturally want to embrace and enjoy those feelings that make us feel good and we tend to avoid those feelings that make us feel bad. We push away those bad feelings and try to escape them as soon as possible. Ignoring or trying to bury our uncomfortable feelings, however, isn?t enough to banish them forever. Those feelings still remain and, as the saying goes, what we resist, persists.

The best way to transform and release uncomfortable feelings is stay with them. If it is not possible for you to do this at the first moment of these feelings, go back and revisit them when you are in a safe environment. When you have some privacy and feel safe, allow yourself to feel those uncomfortable feelings. In much less time than you expect, they will release their grip on you. Many report that they experience an intense feeling of peacefulness and deep happiness at the moment of the release and transformation of these feelings.

Everyone has a desire for happiness. One way to increase our happiness is to expand our definition of happiness to include our ability and courage to experience a full range of feelings.

Love every one of your feelings because they add to the richness of your life. This richness is where your true happiness lies. Be a friend to yourself and congratulate yourself for your ability to have and experience all of your feelings.

Animated Gifs As Ads? Tumblr Experiments With New Advertising Format

tumblr_m9kmiv7jqz1qz4si8o1_1280GIF, a filetype that celebrated its 25th anniversary this past June (don't you feel old now?), won't die. And the animated GIF, in particular, has seen a notable?resurgence recently, as a newer, younger group of netizens rediscover its capabilities, posting GIFs to social networks, blogs and in fashion editorials. "Cinemagraph"-making apps became trendy, and Tumblr posts filled with animated GIFs ranging from the artsy to the humorous. But animated GIFs aren't just for fun anymore - Tumblr has turned them into a money-making tool. Yesterday, the company ran a sponsored animated GIF in its Tumblr Radar section, and not surprisingly, it was for fashion brand Calvin Klein. Yes, you read that right: animated GIFs are ads now.
